RENEW Expands, Offers Additional Programs

Burke Development recently announced the expansion of Project RENEW to offer additional programs and employment opportunities. In partnership with Western Piedmont Community College, BDI has expanded the RENEW program to offer two new programs – HVAC Technician Certification and Logistics Technician Certification. The NC Manufacturing Certification will continue to be offered as well. The new programs were put together with input from local employers and industry representatives. During focus group sessions they defined what skill sets they were looking for in potential candidates. Each class is 96 hours of instruction and takes four months to complete. The HVAC class is designed to prepare an entry level candidate for a position as an HVAC Technician. The class was composed with input from representatives at Triangle Contractors, Perkins Heating and Air and Standard Heating and Air. The Logistics Technician class prepares students for a career in manufacturing. It gives a general manufacturing knowledge but specifically focuses on training for logistics and the tracking of inventory through the manufacturing process. This program was comprised with input from Caterpillar, Environmental Inks, Viscotec, Valdese Weavers and Richelieu. Each program is available to anyone interested in registering; however, they are free for anyone unemployed or underemployed. Participants must pass the CRC (Career Readiness Certification) prior to enrollment. Classes for all three programs will begin in January. Many classes will be offered during the day and at night to accommodate the schedules of participants who are currently employed but seeking new opportunities. RENEW Project Manager Peggy Byrd will work with candidates upon completion of the programs to assist them with finding a long term employment solution. “The goal is that each participant finds a job,” said Byrd. “We know that not everyone has time to complete a two year degree. These programs are designed to be a jump start into a new career. They provide valuable knowledge for people with busy schedules who want to get started and are willing to learn and grow once on the job.” Anyone interested in the NC Manufacturing Certification, the HVAC Technician Certification or the Logistics Technician Certification should register soon because information sessions are now being scheduled.
