BDI started Project RENEW (Re-Educating a New Employable Workforce), a unique, workforce development program, through a collaboration with local companies. A partnership with Western Piedmont Community College, the 96-hour course is designed to re-tool, re-educate and re-invent the local workforce. See one of the success stories:
FOR POTENTIAL PARTICIPANTS:
Requirements: Must be unemployed or underemployed; must be at least 18 years old; must be able to present the following documents: birth certificate, social security card, drivers license/photo ID, selective service registration card (males only), copy of your high school diploma or GED; copy of any previous degrees, diplomas or certificates. Classes are typically held in the mornings and evenings to accommodate participant’s schedules. There is a strict attendance policy.
FOR EXISTING EMPLOYERS:
RENEW is seen as an asset by many Burke County companies. There are RENEW Partners who have committed to the program and recognize the graduates as top candidates for entry level positions.
“It is less training that we have to do once we have them in the door. Somebody could be the best worker in the world but if they don’t have some initial training on what it is like to work in a modern manufacturing facility then they won’t be able to do the job. It also helps give us a clear understanding of what we are getting and what the employee already knows.”
– Kenny Keathley, Environmental Inks, Head of SCM-Operations
The current list of participating companies are:
|Sypris||Caterpillar||Packaging Corporation of America|
|American Roller Bearing||Marves||Cherokee Manufacturing|
|BSN Medical||SpartaCraft||Environmental Inks/Siegwerk|
