Celebrate Burke Biz at Opportunity Threads

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (September 21, 2012) –On Sept. 20 BDI staff members were joined by elected officials from Burke County and the City of Morganton at Opportunity Threads for Celebrate Burke Biz.

The event, held monthly, is an opportunity for BDI to thank local companies for doing business in Burke, and also to honor company employees for their commitment and hard work. September’s event was held at Opportunity Threads, a cut and sew cooperative, located on Hwy. 70 East in Morganton.

BDI President Scott Darnell greeted everyone and introduced Morganton Mayor Mel Cohen, as well as Burke County Manager Bryan Steen, for comments. Both praised founder Molly Hemstreet and employees for their work.

After the meal, which was provided by local business owner Jeff Whisnant at Buck’s Pizza, Hemstreet took everyone on a tour and answered questions about the textile company’s products, future endeavors and business model.

Others in attendance included Burke County Commissioner Johnnie Carswell; Morganton City Manager Sally Sandy; Assistant City Manager Ron George; and Morganton Council Members John Cantrell, Sidney Simmons and Alfred Hammer.

The Burke County Chamber of Commerce also participates in Celebrate Burke Biz by sponsoring the cake.
