Business Owners Receive Grant for New Barbeque Restaurant

JD’s Smokehouse to Open in Rutherford College BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (August 27, 2012) – The NC Rural Center has awarded Jim and Debbie Goare a Building Reuse and Restoration grant to aid in their efforts to open a barbeque restaurant in Burke County. The Goares will open JD’s Smokehouse in the building located at 500 Malcolm Blvd in Rutherford College. “We’re excited once again to be part of this community,” said Debbie Goare. “After looking for a suitable location in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina we decided on the vacant building in Rutherford College. Growing up in Burke County and having family ties here, it just seemed to be a perfect fit for us.” The Goares say they hope to create a wholesome, family atmosphere where the food is good, service is quick and the atmosphere is inviting and comfortable. The $40,000 grant will be used to update the HVAC and electrical systems. The restaurant will employ at least five full time employees and the Goares hope to open in October or November. “It’s the intent of the town council of Rutherford College to construct an environment that’s conducive to long term economic stability by supporting its local businesses,” said Kenneth Geathers Jr., Town Manager of Rutherford College. “We appreciate the support and enthusiasm shown us by Mr. Geathers, Mayor Gary McClure, Rutherford College Town Council, County Commissioner and long time friend Steve Smith, and our family and friends,” continued Goare. “The involvement from everyone has served to confirm our decision to be here in Burke County!” The building will house a sit down restaurant and an outside catering operation. The menu will consist of various slow, smoked meats including pork, beef brisket, chicken and ribs, accompanied by various side items. “It’s always positive to see business people with years of experience coming here to start a business,” said Burke County Board of Commissioners Chairman Wayne Abele. “We’re happy that the Goares chose Burke County as the location for their new restaurant.” The grant was secured through a partnership between the Town of Rutherford College, Burke County, the Western Piedmont Council of Governments and Burke Development, Inc.
